Health Services

Credentialed School Nurses provide district wide health services. The major focus of school nursing services is the prevention and detection of illness and disability, including:

Create school health care plans to support students with health conditions
Conduct state-mandated screenings: hearing, vision, and color deficiency
Provide first aid, and communicable disease control
Provide health counseling to pupils, parents, and school staff
Refer pupils and parents to appropriate community resources for suspected medical diagnosis and treatment
Collaborate with community programs to screen and link students and families to health resources

Immunization Requirements

IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS FOR GRADES TK - 12

With the passage of Senate Bill 276, starting January 1, 2021, all new medical exemptions for school and child care entry must be issued through CAIR-ME. Parents must create an account and log in to CAIR-ME to submit a request for a medical exemption. The child's doctor, then, must complete the medical exemption in CAIR-ME and print a copy for the parents to give to the child’s school or child care facility. A medical exemption may be issued in CAIR-ME no more than 12 months before a child first enters a grade span (grade spans are birth - preschool, TK/K - 6th, and 7th - 12th).

Mandated Hearing and Vision Screenings

California law (Ed. Code 49452, Ed. Code 49455, 17 C.C.R. 2951) and district policy (A.R. 5141.3) require all students in Kindergarten or 1st , 2nd, 5th, 8th, and 10th grades as well as students upon first enrollment in a California public school shall receive vision and hearing screenings performed by the school nurse or other authorized person during the school year. If there is an abnormal finding, parents will be notified by letter. Please contact your school site if you have any concerns regarding your child and the screening process.

Kindergarten Oral Health Exam Requirement

California law (Ed. Code 49452.8) requires children entering kindergarten or first grade, whichever is the child’s first year in public school, have an oral health exam and present a certificate signed by a licensed dentist or other licensed or registered dental health professional by May 31 of that school year. Oral health assessments that occurred within 12 months prior to school entry meet this requirement. If the child does not receive this exam, the parent must file a waiver stating the reason the certificate was not obtained. This service may be available at little or no cost through insurance provided by Medi-Cal: 805.781.1600 or 888.747.1222. Please contact your school site with questions.

First Grade Health Examination Requirements

California law (H & S Code sections 124040, 124045, 124085) and district regulation (A.R. 5141.3) require that parents of each child enrolling in first grade provide verification signed by a physician, that the child received a physical examination between 18 months before to 90 days after first grade entry. If a child does not receive this exam, the parent must provide the district with a waiver stating reasons the child did not receive a physical, or the child may be sent home if the parent fails to provide this verification.
