English Language Arts/English Language Development

Our goal in SLCUSD is for students to become avid, strategic, grade level readers and writers who are creative, critical thinkers, intentional communicators and self-reflective learners. Rigorous grade-level expectations are articulated in the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), in the CA ELD standards, and the CA ELA/ELD framework for reading, writing, speaking and listening, and language. These standards and framework guide instruction in both English language arts, English Language Development and literacy in the content areas.

In addition to using the Reading Units of Study developed by Teachers College at Columbia University, teachers also use a variety of leveled books with varying perspectives at students' independent and instructional reading levels.

English Language Development (ELD)

Using the California ELA/ELD standards, English Language Development is taught and supported within the context of all of our elementary/secondary curriculum.

Elementary Dual Language Immersion Schools: Baywood & Pacheco

Reading Curriculum:

Kindergarten-1st grades - Maravillas by McGraw-Hill - Maravillas is a fully equitable Spanish Language Arts program that supports students as they become bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural.
2nd - 6th grades - Adelante/Advance by Benchmark - Aligned with Science of Reading research, Benchmark Advance and Adelante are core language arts programs that provide a cohesive structure for the development of literacy skills and content knowledge.

Secondary - 7th grade - 12th grade (6th on the Coast)

Currently, our secondary ELA approach is novel-based, common core aligned with reading, writing, speaking and listening embedded into all classrooms 7-12. English courses focus on teaching the three writing types: narrative, informational/explanatory, and argument writing. The courses instruct students in analyzing both literary and informational texts, building speaking and listening skills, and learning grammar and mechanics. These skills prepare students for 21st century demands such as higher order thinking, communication and collaboration, and continuous learning.
