What is Transitional Kindergarten?

The Kindergarten Readiness Act is a law that changed the age for entrance into kindergarten in California. Children must now be five years of age for kindergarten by September 1st. Transitional kindergarten is the first year of a two-year kindergarten program for younger children that acts as a link between the flexible environment of preschool and the more structured academic setting of kindergarten.

With the passage of AB 130 in 2021, the state is expanding early learning opportunities through Universal Transitional Kindergarten (UTK) to all 4 year-olds over the next few years (details can be found on the Phased in UTK Eligible Birthday Chart). During the 2023–2024 school year, students must turn 5 years old between September 2, 2023 and April 30, 2024 (extended from April 2). Classes will be offered at all nine elementary sites that offer kindergarten (not including Teach Elementary).

For the 2024-25 school year, children are eligible for TK if they turn 5 between September 2, 2024 and June 2, 2025. Depending on space availability, we will also allow students who have their 4th birthday by September 1 to be put on a waitlist. We will attempt to tell parents as soon as possible about whether we will be able to accommodate these students. Please contact isla@slcusd.org for more information.
