Solar - Energy Production and Net Zero Energy

Solar Systems

San Luis Coastal Unified School District was one of the first in the state to add solar panels at our school sites. Laguna Middle School, Los Osos Middle School, Morro Bay High School, and San Luis Obispo High School all have solar panel canopies in their parking lots. These systems were installed in 2012 and have effectively added power to the grid, while saving the school district money on electric bills.

Size of Solar Panel System:

  • Laguna Middle School – 250 kW
  • Los Osos Middle School – 200 kW
  • Morro Bay High School – 370 kW
  • San Luis Obispo High School – 708 kW

We are also preparing a study to add solar systems to the rest of our district facilities. The district has hired a local electrical contractor, Thoma Electric, to assist us with the solar master plan.

Zero Net Energy – Prop 39 – Energy Efficiency

At Los Osos Middle School, the solar system, Prop 39, California’s Clean Energy Jobs Act, LED lighting work, replacement HVAC systems, and new energy efficient water heaters have allowed us to become a Zero Net Energy Site. The Zero Net Energy Project outlines the work that was done to bring Los Osos Middle School into compliance and reach the zero net energy goal. Page 18 of the PG&E report focuses on Los Osos Middle School as a pilot site.

Since this work was done in 2019 with the PG&E grant, the district has modernized both comprehensive high schools and is currently moving forward with plans to modernize the elementary, middle, and continuation schools. Measure D and now Measure C are adding new energy efficient HVAC systems throughout every classroom in the district, this includes moving away from natural gas and installing electric units.  A much more climate friendly infrastructure. The new HVAC systems also come with better controls and systems to assist in decreasing our energy usage. For example, new Title 24 code requires us to install monitors that will turn off the air conditioning if windows or doors are opened. All of our sites are being upgraded or were upgraded with Prop 39 to motion sensor lighting with multi-zone features, so that staff can adjust the lighting according to need. New energy efficient lighting has been replaced with Prop 39 and will continue to improved through our two bond measures.

How Did Our Solar Panels Help Our Climate This Year?

Our solar panel system avoided using 1,810,953 kilowatts of energy per hour in 2023-2024. This is equivalent to: 

Greenhouse gas emissions from:

  • 301 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles driven for one year 

CO2 emissions from:

  • 142,356 gallons of gasoline consumed
  • 1,394,253 pounds of coal burned

greenhouse gas emissions avoided by:

  • 439 tons of waste recycled instead of landfilled
