Vision and Mission

The San Luis Coastal Unified School District is focused on preparing our students for the future to ensure our world is a better place.

Vision: San Luis Coastal Unified School District prepares students for a life of purpose. Our students become courageous and creative thinkers. They are college and career ready, skillful collaborators, and productive contributors to a diverse and rapidly changing world.

Mission: San Luis Coastal Unified School District educates students through rigorous, relevant, and engaging experiences provided by caring, connected staff with support of the entire community.

This sustainability plan takes both the district’s vision and mission into account. It focuses specifically on the ways we can teach and guide our students. The following is our sustainability plan mission statement:

San Luis Coastal Unified School District will minimize greenhouse gas emission, demonstrate leadership, provide education and actionable solutions that students can engage in to address climate change, and work to ensure that all students graduate as knowledgeable and globally-minded citizens.

We are focused on preparing our students for the future to ensure our world is a better place for them, as well as the rest of the world, to live. The community supported the district with two separate bond measures to bring our facilities into the 21st century. Our schools are being modernized with the latest energy efficient technology, as well as efficient use of our natural resources. The latest Title 24 California Standards are embedded in all of our plans and construction. We also have begun the process of electrifying our transportation fleet. This has been made possible by our ongoing relationship with the Air Pollution Control District, who has assisted us in obtaining several grants. While maximizing our transportation options for students, we continue to work with our city and county transportation providers, as well as Safe Routes to School. Not only does this focus reduce greenhouse gasses, it also promotes a healthy lifestyle.

Our Food Services department is a shining light when it comes to sustainable practices. School gardens, local produce procurement, reduced packaging, and a new focus on recycling and composting are all ways that they are taking the lead in our sustainability efforts in SLCUSD.

Teaching our students about sustainability and their role in the future of our world is at the core of our plan. Through integration of these topics into our science curriculum, as well as hands-on applications at our school sites, we will ensure our students understand what they can do to help the world and themselves.

On June 5, 2018, The SLCUSD Board of Education passed a resolution “Addressing Climate Change.” Today’s students will be profoundly impacted by the accumulation of greenhouse gasses being emitted into the atmosphere. The resolution recognizes the threat of Climate Change and addresses ways the district will move forward to support students to reduce the impact of climate change for future generations. The district will support:

  • Continued assurance that new buildings and modernization of existing buildings use environmentally sensitive building materials, as well as efficient use of energy, water and other resources whenever possible;

  • Collaboration efforts with cities and outside agencies to create safe routes for students to bike and walk to school;

  • Programs at the elementary, middle, and high school levels for recycling and composting programs, and encourage all schools within the district to participate;

  • Continued evaluation of sustainability improvement efforts for the school lunch program (e.g., more food locally sourced and/or organic food, more vegetarian options, less processed/packaged food);

  • Endeavor to create and maintain school gardens as hands-on learning experiences that promote good nutrition and stewardship of the land; and

  • Integration of studying climate change into next generation science standards and state-adopted curriculum.

The district is also focused on other aspects of sustainability such as transportation/vehicles, waste management and recycling, technology, and overall student wellness.
