Soccer Rules of Play

Game Setup

  • Each team has 7 players on the field: 1 goalkeeper and 6 outfield players.
  • 30-minute games - two 15-minute halves.
    • 5-minute halftime for water and subs.

Key Rules

  • No heading the ball of slide tackling.
  • No offside penalties.
  • Unlimited substitutions are allowed.
    • Players can switch in and out at any time with the ball is out of play.

Kick-In/Free Kick

  • When the ball goes out of bounds, restart with a kick-in.
  • When a foul occurs, restart with an indirect free kick.
  • All free kicks are indirect, meaning the ball must touch another player before a goal can be scored.

Goalkeeper Guildelines

  • Goalkeepers are allowed to use their hands, but only close to their goal.
  • If a goalkeeper handles the ball too far from the goal, use your judgement and give a warning.
  • If needed, award an indirect free kick.

Penalty Kicks/Fouls

  • A penalty kick can be given if a foul occurs near the goal and warrants a direct kick.
  • Penalty kicks are the direct kicks in the game.

Managing Player Conduct

  • If a player commits a physical foul, allow both players to cool down off the field.
  • Take a moment to talk to the players and remind them of the rules before they can get back into the game.
