Music instruction begins in 4th grade. General music instruction includes voice, recorder, ukulele, and guitar. The goal of the general music classroom is to develop students into young musicians that are music literate, have a love for music, and are confident performers. Through the recorder, students learn how to read, write, and play music using the treble clef system. Through ukulele and guitar, students will learn how to read and play lead charts, TABs system, and chord charts. Students are taught to sing on pitch, in time, and with proper singing voices. Students in the elementary program are also provided various opportunities to play percussion instruments, compose, write their own songs, engage in cross-curriculum units, and complete many other memorable activities.
There is an optional before and after-school band program offered at each school. Instruction is offered on flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, french horn, trombone, baritone, and percussion. The goal of this program is to introduce students to wind band and a more serious music-making experience.
