Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBAC)

The Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBAC) are part of the  California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). The summative assessments, or end-of-year tests,  are an annual measure of what students know and can do using the Common Core State Standards for English language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics. These are given in the spring of each school year to students grades 3rd-8th and 11th grade and consist of two parts: a computer adaptive test and a performance task.

The SBAC provides educators, students, and parents meaningful results with actionable data to help students succeed. It also includes a comprehensive suite of standards-aligned tools and resources including interim assessments, a summative assessment, and Tools for Teachers, which provide differentiated lessons and activities that can help teachers support student learning.

SBAC Summative assessments:

  • accurately describe both student achievement (how much students know at the end of the year) and student growth (how much students have improved since the previous year) to inform program evaluation and school, district, and state accountability systems;
  • include writing at every grade and ask students to solve multi-step, real-world problems in mathematics;
  • feature computer-adaptive testing, performance tasks, and a wide range of accessibility options, allowing students to effectively demonstrate their knowledge and abilities; and
  • provide multiple reporting options, giving educators the information they need in a timely manner and in their preferred format.

The video below explores the Smarter Balanced summative assessment. The summative assessment, along with the interim assessments, and formative assessment instructional supports, are designed to work together to support high quality teaching, improve learning for all students, and prepare students for life after high school. In this video, you will learn about the two parts of the summative assessment, why it is a valuable component of every student's educational journey, and what supports are available to make it accessible for test-takers.
