Closest to his heart are his two children who attended SLCUSD and his grandson who is following his K-12 journey in SLCUSD schools. He speaks at education conferences on community and parent engagement in public schools. Being the Tribune editor and education reporter deeply involved him in the community. Acting as San Luis Obispo County PTA president, he interacted with parent leaders from across the district and county. In Lucia Mar, he worked with elementary students every day as the school's lab tech instructor. As an instructor at Allan Hancock, his students won state awards. Mr. Buchman's involvement as a trustee includes: CSEA Negotiating Team, Board Policy Review Committee, and Safe and Nurturing Schools Subcommittee. At the state level, he is the Regional Delegate to the California School Boards Association (Climate Change Task Force, Nominating Committee, Policy Platform Committee, and Convention Committee) and the California state PTA Board of Managers. Locally, he served on the County Anti Gang Task Force, Regional Occupation Program board, San Luis Obispo Child Abuse Prevention Council President, member CC4IS (LBGTQ education watchdog group), TriCounty Education Coalition chair, AYSO Regional Director, and county emergency response team.
