Board of Trustees: 2021-22 Strategic Priorities

Trustee Areas

The Board of Education is comprised of seven elected officials. They are currently elected under an “at-large” election system, where trustees are elected by voters of the entire District in even-numbered years and serve staggered, four-year terms with a requirement that four members reside in Trustee Area 1 and three in Trustee Area 2.  Area 1 encompasses the City of San Luis Obispo, Avila Beach, a portion of Pismo Beach (north of Spyglass and west of Hwy 101), and the unincorporated areas between those communities to the southern boundary. Area 2 is comprised of the communities of Los Osos and Morro Bay.

Recently, however, public entities have had their at-large election systems challenged under the California Voting Rights Act (CVRA) which resulted in expensive and divisive litigation. On April 16, 2019, the Board adopted Resolution No. 16-18-19 to initiate a transition to a By-Trustee Area Election System commencing with the 2022 Election.
