The role of Board members is to set guiding policies for San Luis Coastal Unified School District.

Seven elected trustees comprise the Board of Education.  They are elected "at large" and represent the entire district, despite the requirement that four members reside in Trustee Area 1 and three reside in Trustee Area 2.  Area 1 encompasses the City of San Luis Obispo, Avila Beach, a portion of Pismo Beach (north of Spyglass and west of Hwy 101), and the unincorporated areas between those communities to the southern boundary.   Area 2 is comprised of the communities of Los Osos and Morro Bay.
