The Food Service Department encourages the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains. Children who are involved in producing their food are more likely to eat it. Last school year, students at Pacheco Elementary School grew lettuce, which was then served in the school cafeteria. This school year we will be offering an array of fresh fruits and vegetables everyday on the salad bars. Recently, fresh fruit was added to the breakfast menu, in addition to the fruit juice. It is recommended that we eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day. Students who take advantage of the fruits and vegetables offered at breakfast and lunch should have no problem getting their “5-A-Day”.
