SLOHS Auto Students Place in National Championship
Monday, 29 June 2009 - District Newswire
Two students from San Luis Obispo High School took fifth place at the 2009 Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills National Championship. The competition is designed to find the future stars of the automotive industry and gives auto tech students an opportunity to showcase their problem-solving skills by resolving "real-world" repair challenges in a timed, head-to-head match-up of top teams representing all 50 states.
Eric Reed and Doug Rinell, seniors at SLOHS, took just 50 minutes and 29 seconds to repair their bugged Ford Escape at the Ford/AAA headquarters in Michigan. They were coached by SLOHS Industrial Tech teacher, Jeff Lehmkuhl, and accompanied to the contest by the Auto Club's Motor Sports Manager, Rick Lalor. The team members received a school trophy and scholarships of up to $14,000 each. In addition, the Instructor and students will receive a 2008 Ford Edge for future automotive tech students to train on at the high school.
The District would like to thank Perry Ford in San Luis Obispo who provided the car for the team to train on. The dealership owner, Perry Faulk, and his group have been great supporters of the auto skills program at SLOHS.
