Our Schools: San Luis Coastal's schools include 10 elementary, 2 middle, 2 comprehensive high schools, and 1 continuation high school. Maintaining small schools reflects our educational philosophy of knowing students on a very personal level. Our success as a district is reflected by numerous California Distinguished School Awards, National Blue Ribbon Awards, and many other honors. Our schools are dynamic, student-centered learning communities where all children are expected to take risks, explore new opportunities, and discover their unique potential.
Our Belief: We believe that every child matters regardless of their circumstances. Through the three “Rs” of rigor, relevance, and relationship, students are provided valuable opportunities to become the very best they can be. “Success for All” requires many hands, multiple networks of thoughtful people, and an expectation that every child can achieve to their fullest. This is our conscious journey as a school district.
Our Community: San Luis Coastal shares the broader community with the post-secondary learning institutions of California Polytechnic University and Cuesta Community College. We have established strong partnerships with both schools and enjoy a symbiotic relationship that continues despite the current difficult economic times. Another significant partner for SLCUSD is Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) - as our district boundaries are home to the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant. Annual tax revenue from this facility provides crucial financial support to our school district and has supported our educational programs for many years. We have also recently partnered with several non-profit agencies in San Luis Obispo to open Family Resource Centers (FRCs) in the communities of Los Osos and San Luis Obispo. FRCs are designed to assist our families who struggle with the challenges of poverty, employment, and navigating the school system.
The Endowment for the Advancement of Children (TEACh Foundation): We are fortunate to have an educational foundation focused on improving the quality of learning in our school district. The TEACh Foundation has awarded thousands of dollars to San Luis Coastal teachers to enhance classroom tools and experiences for students. We continue to partner with TEACh to best support our evolving student needs well into the future.
Our Team: San Luis Coastal has some of the best educators and leaders in the State of California – and those around the State are taking notice. In 2011-2012, Mrs. Elaine Rosenfield was honored as the SLO County Teacher of the Year and runner-up as California's State Teacher of the Year. Additionally, Ms. Liz Moore was named SLO County ROP Teacher of the Year in 2011-2012. In 2010-2011, Ms. Cathy Ahearn was honored as our County’s Teacher of the Year. Previously we have had California Teachers of the Year in 2008 (Diana Barnhart) and 1997 (Mike Aiello). These amazing educators symbolize who we are as a learning community. Our principals and district leaders create innovative programs and inspire high-level professional learning communities. I can assure you, we are only scratching the surface of our future success as a school district.

The Educational Services Division welcomes you to the wonderful district of San Luis Coastal Unified.
We currently employ approximately 800 employees to provide services to our students and the schools and departments in our district. The majority of our employees are teachers and other certificated staff. Additionally, we employ about 300 support personnel who keep students safe and healthy, buildings clean and well maintained, technology in working order, and our offices and departments running efficiently. We recruit employees only as vacancies occur. Our primary method of advertising is through web page and EdJoin. Prospective applicants are always encouraged to call our Personnel office at (805) 549-1233 for additional information.
Our schools also encourage volunteers to work in the office and classrooms. Please contact your local school site to ask how you can contribute and make a difference.

San Luis Coastal Unified School District is an exciting and successful school district. We are committed to assisting in the continuation of the fine record of student and staff achievement, and will provide the resources necessary to enhance the educational process the community feels will best prepare our students for a successful future.
The Business Services Division provides support systems that enable teachers and administrators to focus on student achievement. We monitor resources, disburse funds, maximize revenues, establish controls to safeguard our assets, and generally maintain the facilities and technology in a condition to promote learning.
We all believe that student learning and education is the ultimate profession. It is our goal and passion to create the essential environment that will result in San Luis Coastal Unified School District providing the best possible education to our students.
